With Mediasite, Belmont University School of Nursing provides enhanced educational experiences to improve patient healthcare and eliminate medical errors. The Belmont University School of Nursing wanted to provide students more opportunities for interaction with classroom and lab materials without putting more pressure on faculty schedules. School officials also sought to enhance the educational experience to support a national initiative for better patient safety and fewer errors.
Throughout the school’s new state-of-the-art facility, Mediasite records skill demonstrations, classroom lectures and student lab performances for either publishing to CD or automatically webcasting over the Internet. Students have both live and on-demand access to these presentations anytime, anywhere to gain a better understanding of classroom concepts and perfect their nursing skills. Mediasite use continues to increase, and the school plans to use Mediasite for exam reviews and additional programs and online classes.

Mediasite helps school support nationwide initiative for better patient care
The Belmont University School of Nursing is committed to supporting the national initiative for better patient safety and fewer errors. Students are required to attend both classroom lectures and hands-on lab sessions, receiving frequent feedback on their skill performance from faculty. Recently, the school relocated to a large, state-of-the-art facility equipped with the latest in medical technology, including four labs complete with simulation manikins. These simulation labs provide a safe but realistic environment for students to hone and gain confidence in their skills before interacting with real patients. Faculty at the School of Nursing wanted to provide students more opportunities to review classroom concepts and receive feedback on their skills, but they struggled to find extra time for these interactions.
The School implemented the Mediasite platform to automatically capture and synchronize video, audio and high-resolution images from multiple locations throughout the facility. The presentations are made available for students to view live or on-demand via any web browser.
Basic nursing skills such as blood administration are demonstrated by nursing professionals and recorded with Mediasite, whereby students can watch on-demand as many times as needed until they fully understand the concepts. Lectures are also recorded and made available online. Professors use a variety of technology in their presentations; for example, many annotate on interactive Smartboards to clarify complex concepts. They rely on Mediasite to integrate the multimedia instruction into a synchronized presentation available to students for repeated viewing. Additionally, faculty members record students in the lab while they practice nursing skills on the simulation mannequins. The Mediasite recordings are published to CDs so students can review, evaluate and improve their performance on specific tasks.
“Students love the around-the-clock access to information Mediasite gives them. The recorded lectures and demonstrations let students set their own schedules because they can review information critical to their education anytime, anywhere they have internet access,” said Beth Hallmark, RN, MSN, lab coordinator at Belmont School of Nursing. “If a student misses a class, the availability of a Mediasite recording of the actual classroom session means the material is available to them in its entirety and exactly as it was presented.” Informal results indicate that students actually perform better in classes where they attend lectures in the classroom and later review the sessions with Mediasite.
Interest among faculty is growing as well, Hallmark says. Instructors appreciate Mediasite’s ease-of-use and are beginning to record more lectures while also discovering new ways to make use of the Mediasite platform. Plans for the future include using Mediasite for exam review sessions and additional online classes and extending use to the graduate nursing program.
