Each year, Centennial College hosts a mock disaster training day for students, medical staff and first responders in Toronto, Canada. Hundreds of volunteers, including Centennial students, role play to simulate emergency situations. This year it was a subway crash and a mass shooting, and one of the college’s campuses served as a mock hospital.
The annual event lets medical professionals work and problem solve together and better prepares them for real life disaster situations. Plus, students get hands on experience that is impossible to have in the classroom.
The large-scale event involves up to 1,000 people, but it is valuable to any medical professional and student worldwide. The college, which has 20,000 full-time students and 2,000 faculty and staff in programs including police foundations, nursing, firefighting and paramedics, live streams the events using Mediasite so anyone can watch in real time, said Rene Chakraborty, Webcasting Services Administrator, Centennial College.
“Our big successes with Mediasite are the dozens of live events like this that we record and make available on-demand,” Chakraborty said.
The disaster training event is one of a number of campus and community events the college records – assemblies, guest speakers, major announcements, seminars, and a live broadcast of the construction going on at one of the college’s campuses to name a few.
“We got a real big kudos when we recorded our first graduation ceremony,” he said. With a large and highly diverse international student population, Centennial’s convocation ceremonies receive views all over the world, from Nigeria to Russia to Spain.
While the majority of webcasting is done at events, faculty also use Mediasite in their classrooms. They’re using a Mediasite Desktop Recorder to create, edit and share videos right from their desktops, and Chakraborty expects faculty buy-in to continue to grow.
“We needed an all-encompassing video platform,” Chakraborty said. “Mediasite is powerful, scalable and the perfect fit.”
