The Center for Financial Security at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is making the country a little more financial savvy with its monthly Family Financial Security Webinar Series.

With a grant from the UW-Madison School of Human Ecology Beckner Endowment, the center hosts free webinars on the second Tuesday of every month to provide academic and practitioner perspectives on research promoting family and household financial security. The webinars are targeted at those working directly with clients to improve financial security, such as financial education programs, government agencies, community colleges and universities.

The center is a cross-campus, interdisciplinary entity that focuses on households, consumers and personal financial decision making. The webinar series engages people across campus and the world to “build more secure financial futures,” according to Nicole Truog, Associate Director for the center.

“The series facilitates the translation and communication of recent research findings on family financial security, asset building and financial decision making to a non-academic audience,” she said.

In the spring of 2011 the center hosted four pilot webinars, and the feedback from the public and private sectors was so positive that it expanded the series. Between August 2011 and February 2012 the center hosted six webinars which garnered over 1,200 participants across the country.

Some participants include Wells Fargo, Rutgers University, the Government Accountability Office, U.S. Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve Board and United Way.

“Mediasite facilitates the dissemination of applied research to a national audience and has enabled the Center for Financial Security at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to reach practitioners who are working to improve the financial lives of Americans,” Truog said.

The center is a Rich Media Impact Awards finalist in the Excellence in Education category for enhancing learning and outreach through rich media. Winners will be announced during a special ceremony at UNLEASH 2012 May 7-9 in Madison.
