Hospice Education Network, Inc. Provides Hospice Courses to African Programs via Online Education

Global Reach Finalist - Hospice Education Network

Our population is aging at a faster rate than ever before. There is and will continue to be a growing need for professional caregivers who are skilled at providing care for people at the end of life.

Since 2007 Hospice Education Network (HEN) has provided online education and training to hospice programs across the country. The educational programs have been used by hundreds of hospices to provide new staff orientation, volunteer training, annual in-services and mandatory regulatory training.

“We would not be able to do what we do without Mediasite. Because of this technology we are able to produce high quality lectures by nationally known experts in hospice and palliative care. We are able to capture and deploy them rapidly and inexpensively for our subscribers,” said Heather Wilson, CEO of Hospice Education Network. “HEN is most importantly simple to use. We have evaluations for all of our courses and we consistently get high scores on the tech being effective for training. It’s also simple to access and easy to use.”

As part of a commitment to offer accessible and affordable programs, HEN has begun outreach to other settings and other continents, including Swaziland Hospice at Home and Island Hospice and Bereavement Service in Zimbabwe, Africa.

“Courses are set up in Swaziland. In Zimbabwe we’re sorting out internet bandwidth issues. Through Mediasite and publish-to-go it looks like we’ll be able to bypass the needs of the internet and provide hospice courses to these two programs in Africa,” said Wilson. “Once we work out the kinks and figure out how to make it work for these two programs, we hope to broaden our reach into other parts of Africa.”
