North Hennepin Community College

The North Hennepin Community College had three major problems on its campus in 2009. It wanted to improve student satisfaction, performance and retention and completion rates.

So Larry Schaaf, CIO and Dean of Academic and Technology Services, and his staff searched for a faculty-friendly technology-based solution. For him, the answer was simple.

"We wanted to make sure it was a flexible solution. Faculty friendliness was also a major part for us. Then we wanted to make sure we selected something that was easy to manage. That led us to Mediasite, particularly for its live broadcast capabilities, its on-demand capabilities, video indexing and scheduling and management systems," he said.

By the winter of 2010, North Hennepin had completed a lecture capture pilot program with Mediasite at its core. Almost two dozen course sections in seven disciplines were recorded, offering 700 students on-demand class recordings they could review on their own time, as well as live streaming options so they could watch synchronously for when they couldn’t physically attend class.

At the end of the semester Schaaf and his team collected surveys from the 400+ students who participated in the pilot. The positive results in each category solidified what they already suspected – that Mediasite would indeed help the campus reach its goals.
