The most trusted video managementplatform for academic, enterprise and event webcasting
Queensland University of Technology has come a long way.
Dennis Clark, applications programmer for the Australian university, can clearly remember the days of painstakingly recording the audio from lectures on cassettes (which meant equipping a lecture hall with a cassette recorder, retrieving the cassette after class, duplicating the recording and eventually placing the recording in a library).
Since 2009, the school has been using Mediasite to capture the entire lecture experience, complete with audio, visuals and slides, and over 8,000 recordings – which have received over 600,000 views – have already been done.
“I quickly realized that Mediasite provided a fantastic platform for the delivery of content and in fact for the first time, I could see screen capturing being delivered effectively over a 56k modem,” Clark said.
The school records the lectures, uploads them to a temporary storage space, moves them into the Mediasite platform and delivers them to students via Blackboard. Over 100 rooms are equipped to record lectures, and the school is recording about 70 lectures each day. The semester recently began, and in the first week, there were already over 600 views on the recordings. Clark said he plans to use Mediasite 6 soon, which allows for the viewing of Mediasite presentations on mobile devices.
“This is just the tip of the iceberg because at the moment we’re only recording less than 10 percent of the lectures. I’m very impressed with the Mediasite platform. I think it’s the best that’s available on the market,” Clark said. “I’m looking forward to moving to (Mediasite) 6 in the very near future, because I’m very impressed with the delivery of content to the iPhone and iPad platforms. We look forward to working with Sonic Foundry in the future.”
