Ohio State University Deploys Mediasite Campus-Wide, Creates 7,000 Videos in First Year

Sonic Foundry’s video capture portal, My Mediasite, encourages user-generated content among faculty, staff

MADISON, Wis. — July 22, 2014 — Sonic Foundry, Inc. (NASDAQ: SOFO), the maker of Mediasite Enterprise Video Platform, today announces that The Ohio State University, one of the country’s top 20 public universities according to U.S. News & World Report, uses Mediasite for campus-wide lecture capture and multimedia management.

Prior to deploying Mediasite in March 2013, there was no unified solution to capture and manage lecture content. Instructors had to choose a software recording option, upload their videos for transcoding and then wait days while they were prepared individually for their students. Now, faculty and staff across campus can use Mediasite to record their lectures, make quick edits if needed and share instantly with students and colleagues. Recording is simple, web uploads are automated and distribution is easy as sharing a link.

“Offering a secure, self-service platform like Mediasite for faculty across colleges to record and host their content is extremely valuable,” said David Hooker, Innovation Lead, Office of Distance Education and eLearning. “Mediasite’s powerful video analytics also provide faculty with a complete picture of student engagement. Viewer data shows instructors who is watching what content and when. They can then use that information to design courses accordingly to best benefit students.”

To accelerate even wider use, the university installed My Mediasite Desktop Recorder software on all classroom computers, allowing faculty and staff to create and share videos, lectures and assignments from any device and location. Mediasite Enterprise Video Platform ensures the content is searchable, secure and organized in one place. Since Ohio State began using Mediasite, nearly 7,000 academic videos — 3,200 hours — have been created, garnering more than 180,000 total views.

In August, the university will upgrade to Mediasite 7, including Mediasite MultiView, for multiple, fully-synchronized high definition feeds, and dual video capture.

“The creation of Mediasite video is growing by 49 percent annually at colleges and universities around the world. In its first year using Mediasite, Ohio State University faculty created an impressive number of rich media presentations, right on pace with the usage statistics we’re seeing globally,” said Gary Weis, chief executive officer, Sonic Foundry. “When that content is created and managed on a single platform and just a click away from anyone who needs it, it becomes an invaluable learning asset.”

Mediasite by Sonic Foundry is the video management, lecture capture and academic webcasting platform of choice for 1,250 colleges and universities in 58 countries. Last year more than 2 million hours of academic video were created with Mediasite, receiving 30 million views. With Mediasite, faculty flip classrooms and capture in-class instruction, students report better grades and schools successfully expand their competitive online programs.
