In addition to his commencement speech, the Nobel Peace Prize winner will be honored by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with only the third honorary degree granted by the campus, an Honorary Doctor of Laws and Humane Letters in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the College of Arts and Sciences.
"UT Knoxville has been using Mediasite to webcast its commencement ceremonies for several years, bringing the events to virtual audiences who couldn't attend live, and ensuring the event lives on by making it available to graduates on-demand," said Amy Blakely, assistant director, media and internal relations, UT Knoxville. "During this year's College of Arts and Sciences commencement, where Vice President Al Gore will receive an honorary doctorate and speak, our arena will be filled to capacity with graduates and their families and friends. The webcast will provide a way for the general public to participate."
Blakely continues, "Webcasting with Mediasite is quite appropriate, too, since Gore is such a strong advocate for carbon neutrality and preventing global warming. Webcasting is green technology, because it allows people to attend lectures, meetings, events and commencements virtually, thereby saving the fossil fuels used to travel."
"Sonic Foundry is honored to be the live streaming technology behind UT Knoxville's commencement address by Mr. Gore," said Rimas Buinevicius, chairman and CEO of Sonic Foundry. "Webcasting represents an opportunity to not only reach larger audiences but also impact climate change initiatives. Mediasite's ability to reduce an organization's carbon footprint embodies the forward-thinking platform Gore commends, and exemplifies the achievements that can be made with rich media in the enterprise."
Past commencement addresses delivered by high profile political figures include Michelle Obama at UC Merced, and former President George H.W. Bush at Bryant University.
