An Introduction to Pay per Access In 2006, when the Ontario Hospital Association first began webcasting with Mediasite, our goal was to simply engage our members through a new communication technology. To help motivate members we offered free access to our Mediasite content. With content demand quickly exceeding our capacity to provide this service for free, and to maintain and expand our service, we thought about how we could cover more costs and explored potential revenue generation. Although the the Pay per Access model had been around for several years, for a small organization that had only introduced e-commerce in 2004, moving to a PPA model was going to be a challenge. Todd shares how OHA introduced PPA, the underlying changes to their IT infrastructure and some of the Mediasite features they needed to review.

Connective Webcasting: Exploring Elements of Social Media to Create Engagement Social Science has developed socio-cultural theories from studies of social media that are potentially useful for connecting our audience or clients with our webcasts. These theories look at the underlying reasons why people love to interact with social media and how it is evolving to meet their social requirements of cultural interaction and daily communication. They can also help us to understand how users socially construct their reality or even why there is such rapid engagement in this environment. Armed with these insights, Mark will recommend ways to improve your webcasts using specific factors of engagement, and he'll share current effective practices.

Controlling Content Chaos: How Sandia Streamlined Its Video Management Strategy Sandia National Laboratories employs over 9,000 scientists, engineers, biologists, technologists and support staff. Established over 65 years ago as a research and development facility, it has amassed thousands of hours of image-based technical documentation, research and training. Some of this material is historical or government records and are required to be preserved for up to 75 years using National Archives and Records Administration standards. The content includes thousands of 16 and 35mm films, video tapes and discs in many formats – most created with obsolete technologies. Wolf has undertaken a focused video management initiative with Mediasite Enterprise Video Platform at its core. Together with Sonic Foundry’s Advanced Integration Services specialist, Troy, Wolf shares Sandia’s content strategy for moving all this material into the digital realm and making it accessible, searchable and retrievable. Lessons Learned: Supporting the First Major Online Learning Project in Nigeria Using Mediasite Each year up to 1.3 million students qualify to begin their undergraduate education in Nigeria. However, universities are only able to accommodate 250,000 students with campus studies each year. This imbalance has created a great demand for distance learning to allow more students access to in-country education. Kirby shares how MVU is leveraging its Mediasite expertise to create a large body of online content by recording lecturers at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in partnership with the Center for Distance Learning (CDL) at OAU and Venture Garden Group, a technology consulting company in Lagos, Nigeria. Implementing a large scale Mediasite project in a developing country poses significant challenges. Kirby shares his experiences training novice lecturers in country, acquiring and delivering Mediasite Recorders and deciding where to locate their Mediasite server, thereby providing valuable insights to those facing similar opportunities in less-developed countries.

Expanding Mediasite Use in a Scalable and Sustainable Way Starting in 2008, Villanova University expanded their use of Mediasite even though there was no administrative directive for content capture coupled with strict budgets and limited IT staff. Ankit will discuss how Villanova implemented and married a two-part strategy. Part 1: Bring Mediasite to every professor in the classroom by building a scalable AV infrastructure and sustainable IT support system. Part 2: Implement a targeted Mediasite promotion and training program aimed at faculty, illustrating how Mediasite could record classroom sessions, distance learning lectures and be used to “flip the classroom."

Johns Hopkins Medicine On Demand: A Global Knowledge Transfer Program There are thousands of hours of educational content being delivered throughout Johns Hopkins Medicine International every month, typically in conference rooms and lecture halls. Groups at Hopkins have been capturing content on a regular basis, but how this content is shared and with whom is a challenge. JHMI worked with Focus55 to developed a public user interface to manage the distribution of content to physicians and clinicians worldwide. Today this site, called Hopkins On Demand, allows for user registration, content viewing, searching, tracking, rating and printing completion certificates.
