While Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) is the third largest school in the state, it covers more ground than any other university. The entire eastern part of the state, to be exact. In the dean’s quest to make education accessible to the region’s traditional, non-traditional and dual-enrollment students (high school students taking college courses), she had to think outside the traditional classroom experience.
Armed with a Title V grant, ENMU devised a plan to support graduate programs and other key academic initiatives with Mediasite as the central educational technology to bring it all together. Mary Fanelli Ayala, Ph.D., has been Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico since 2006. Before that, she served as Chair of the Department of Languages and Literature and then as the college’s Assistant Dean. A Professor of Latin American Literature and Culture, she was the recipient of the Carnegie Foundation’s CASE Professor of the Year Award (NM 2001). Mary has been a core team member in a number of collegiate renewal initiatives, such as BEAMS; Greater Expectations’ Inclusive Excellence; AAHE’s Teaching, Learning, and Technology Roundtable; and the university’s Pew Foundation Leadership Award for Undergraduate Renewal. In addition, she serves on several international boards related to higher education and cultural initiatives. Her teaching incorporates Mediasite technology.
